Oswald Piano House, Thatcher's Jewlery
now
Bucks County Soapstone Company
515 W. Walnut Street
The building of three stores, one of which is 515 W. Walnut, was completed in 1923 by Martin Schmidt a local realtor and builder. Some of the bricks used in the building were from the Cressman Lodge building (corner of Seventh and Arch Streets), that was destroyed by fire in 1922. The group of three buildings was often referred to as Schmidt’s Block.
The Oswald Piano Store opened next to the trolley station in the newly completed building. After a few years the piano store relocated and Charles Thatcher opened Thatcher’s Jewelry Store.
Thatcher’s Jewelers remained a respected Perkasie business until 1968 when Paul Uhlig purchased the store and opened Uhlig’s Jewelry and Gift Store. After Uhlig’s closed in 1998, the building was used by various businesses including Zen Java Coffee House and Nutritionally Yours.
Since 2015 the building has been home to Bucks County Soapstone. They have renovated the building and use it as a showroom for their unique material that is used in sinks, countertops and more.
