Olde Towne Convenience Store
517 W. Walnut Street
The building of three stores, one of which is 517 W. Walnut, was completed in 1923 by Martin Schmidt a local realtor and builder. Some of the bricks used in the building were from the Cressman Lodge building on the corner of Seventh and Arch Streets, was destroyed by fire in 1922. The group of three buildings was often referred to as Schmidt’s Block.
Jacob Hoagy purchased the newly completed storefront and opened a restaurant. In 1928 the restaurant was purchased by Clarence Mumbauer. He operated the restaurant and confection business selling candy, cigars, ice cream, magazines. The store a favorite among Perkasie youth who referred to the store as “Mummy’s”. The teenagers would bring their dates here after movies at the Plaza Theatre.
In 1952, Marvin Flexer purchased the building and operated Flexer’s Newsstand selling newspapers, magazines, candy and groceries. They were known for their peanut sundaes. Rick Flexer retired in 2005 and sold the business.
Today, Olde Towne Convenience store occupies the building and sells lottery tickets, snacks, tobacco products and groceries.
