Davis Feed Mill Seventh Street
140 North Seventh Street
Standard Hay Bailing Company constructed a hay press on Seventh Street in the 1880’s. The property was later purchased by Abram Freed and was known as Freed’s Hay House. Local farmers would bring wagons of hay for compression into bales that could more easily be stored and transported.
Edwin F. Stover purchased the Freed property in 1928 with plans to demolish the hay press and construct a feed mill. Shortly after the purchase, Edwin Stover passed away and the property became part of his estate.
After ten years, the Stover estate under the direction of Edwin’s sons Willard and Arthur, finally demolished the hay press and constructed the feed mill. A concrete and metal coal unloading structure (See Memories of Perkasie - Perkasie Historical Society (perkasiehistory.org) for the Davis Feed Mill Trestle) was also constructed in part with Perkasie Borough to unload coal for the neighboring electric plant. The mill and store were operated under the name Edwin F. Stover Estate Feed Mill.
When the Stover Estate was settled in 1968, Willard Stover and his son Mervin operated the business as Stover Feed Company. The current owners, Davis Feed Company purchased the property from Stover’s in 1981. Today, the Davis Feed Mill remains Perkasie’s last operating feed mill and store supplying the community with animal feeds, and garden supplies.
