Maize Restaurant

The building of three stores, one of which is 519 W. Walnut, was completed in 1923 by Martin Schmidt a local realtor and builder. Some of the bricks used in the building were from the Cressman Lodge building located on the corner of Seventh and Arch Streets. The building was destroyed by fire in 1922. The group of three buildings was often referred to as Schmidt’s Block.
Frank Lichtfuss purchased the property and opened his barber shop shortly after the building was completed. He operated his shop until 1951 when Andy Gerhart purchased the property for use as Andy’s barber Shop. Andy’s remained a popular place until 1998 when Andy Gerhart retired.
Since 2008 the store has been home to Maize Restaurant, operated by chef, Matthew Mc Phelin . Maize is an acclaimed farm - to - table restaurant known for fresh innovative cuisine.
