The original structure on this site was a frame building, which housed eight guestrooms. Aaron Kern was the first licensed landlord.
Phillip Cressman purchased the American House from Oliver Nase in 1882. Beginning in 1887, Phillip Cressman began making improvements to the property. The original hotel was moved across the empty lots to 115 & 117 N. 6th St. By 1894 a new hotel and adjoining businesses along Seventh St. had been constructed. The new hotel had a distinctive tower, which was later removed. The hotel burned in the fire of 1988 and the property became an empty lot for a number of years.
In 2015-2016, a new retail/residential building was constructed on this site currently (2022) housing such businesses as the Rise and Grind Cafe, Bloom and Hickory Stick on 7th Street (formerly Rita's).
In 2024 Sage Bliss Aesthetics opened in the former Bloom Flower Shop at 5 N. 7th Street.
