The Perkasie Boxcar
Eighth and Market Street
The Perkasie Boxcar is believed to be of Pennsylvania Railroad heritage. After the service life of the car ended it was taken out of service (it’s number white lined) and stored on a scrap line in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Needing extra storage space for his woodstove business, the owner of American Energy Alternatives purchased two white lined cars.
The railroad delivered the cars circa 1980 and placed them alongside the Perkasie Freight station. When the Perkasie freight yard was converted into the Eighth Street parking lot in 2001, the train tracks leading to the freight station were cut leaving the cars without a railroad connection.
American Energy Alternatives closed in 2017 and had one of the cars cut up for scrap. The remaining car was painted blue and fitted with Perkasie mural panels in 2025. The mural spells out PERKASIE and was designed by Carrie Kingsbury of Promiseland Murals. The mural will be dedicated on August 26, 2025.
